MEHRANGARH FORT

HISTORY :-
Jodhpur has become a vintage charm for all its tourists which is seen in its heritage monuments. One such monument is Mehrangarh Fort.
It stands on a hilltop, rising about 122 m (400 ft) above the surrounding plains, and the complex spans 1,200 acres (486 hectares). It is one of the largest forts in Rajasthan.
Mehrangarh Fort was originally built around 1459 by Rao Jodha, son of Raja Ranmal. However, most of the existing structure was built in the 17th century by his successors. He was the ruler of Mandore but later he shifted to Jodhpur and made this the capital city.
Mehrangarh Fort is famous for its splendid architecture. Later, many rulers rule their province from Mehrangarh Fort such as Maharaja Takht Singh, Maharaja Ajit Singh, Maharaja Hanwant Singh, and Maharaja Maldeo.
GENERAL INFORMATION :-
It’s Free to enter Mehrangarh fort but you will need to buy a ticket to access important places in it like Museum, Mahals etc. Tickets are available from the counter near the fort's main entrance, Jai Pol, on the northeast side. The Fort has an another entrance Fateh Pol on the southwest side but it is lesser used. We recommend you to visit Fateh Pol to get best aerial view of jodhpur as It is close to the Old City's Navchokiya neighborhood, where most of the blue houses are.

  • ATTRACTION :-
    • CHAMUNDA MATA TEMPLE:- This temple is also known as Nagnechi maa temple. This temple is located inside Mehrangarh Fort. The temple hosts a lavish Dussehra celebration, drawing huge crowds. Maa chamunda (Nagnechi Maa) is Iestdevi (Kuldevi) of Royal Rathore Family.
    • MUSEUM:- Museum is located inside the fort. To visit this museum you need to buy a ticket from ticket counter at entrance gate of the fort this museum. It contains some of the finest palaces and preserves in its museum many priceless relics of Indian courtly life including miniature paintings, textiles and furnishings, palanquins, elephant seats and arms and armour.
    • Moti Mahal:- Known as the Pearl Palace, Moti Mahal is one of the most exquisite places within Mehrangarh Fort. It features stunning stained-glass windows that cast colorful patterns in the sunlight.
    • Phool Mahal:- Phool Mahal is the most opulent structure in the fort. The rich decor and elaborate make it a visual delight. It highlights lifestyles of rathors.
    • Sheesh Mahal:- Sheesh Mahal is famed for its intricate mirror work. Walls and ceilings of the palace are adorned with thousands of tiny mirror that creates a dazzling effect when illuminated. This splendid craftsmanship showcases the artistic excellence of the Rajputs.
    • Jhanki Mahal:- Where the royal women used to peer down at the proceedings in the courtyard, is known for its lattice windows.



  • HOW TO REACH:- There isn’t any public transportation that takes you direct Mehrangarh. You Can take personal vehicle there and you have other options like auto rikshaw and taxis. Don’t forget to bargain for fares before booking . It’s better you ask price to some taxis to get idea about fair fare. If you are solo traveler then choose Bike Taxi from Cab Apps. Vehicles are accessible to fort's main entrance Jai Pol, But It’s recommended to walk up the hill to the fort entrance. It’s 20-30 minute route but must ensure first that it’s not a hot day else you must tired after couple of minutes.

    JASWANT THADA

    Lawaran near Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur 342001

    Jaswant Thada is a magnificent marble cenotaph monument, an elegant structure built of carved white marble. It was built by Maharaja Sardar Singh of Jodhpur State in 1899 in memory of his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, and serves as the cremation ground for the royal Rajput family of Marwar. This Monument is called "Tajmahal of Rajasthan" because It has temple like appearance with domes that makes it look like Tajmahal. The monument is surrounded by beautiful gardens and a peaceful lake. It also houses 3 more cenotaphs.

    UMAID BHAWAN PALACE

    Cantt Area, Jodhpur 342006

    Umaid Bhawan Palace is built between 1928 and 1943. It is named after Maharaja Umaid Singh, grandfather of the present maharaja, Gaj Singh. The palace has 347 rooms and is the principal residence of the former Jodhpur royal family. It is perched on Chittar Hill, the highest point in Jodhpur that’s why it is also called Chittar Palace. It is conveniently located 20 minutes from the airport.
    This palace was built by Maharaja Umaid Singh for famine relief because at that time there was a severe drought caused due to which the condition of the farmers had become miserable, hence the Maharaja built this magnificent palace to provide employment to them.
    The Palace is devided in Three parts. One part for Royal Family’s Residence, Second one for palace and Third part for Museum.
    Here you can see collection of vintage cars where expensive vintage cars are kept. There isn’t any price to enter common premises of the monument and to see car collection but you will need to buy a ticket from the ticket counter at the entrance gate to explore museum located inside the palace.

    GHANTA GHAR

    Sardar Market, Jodhpur 342001

    The Clock Tower In Jodhpur is a beautiful landmark in the city. This is a famous monument in jodhpur located in Sardar bazaar jodhpur but this area is more famous by Ghanta Ghar instead of Sardar bazaar. This landmark is an important place for shopping. This 98 feet high clock tower has three storeys and a 6 feet clock is installed on the third floor. Visitors can climb the tower and watch the surrounding area. Generally, the tower looks its best when it’s lit up with bright lights in evening. This market is usually busy. Here you can buy Handicrafts, Rajasthani Apparels, Spices, Local Food etc. The construction of Ghanta Ghar was started in 1910 by Maharaja Sardar Singh and it was completed on 1912. There are 25 shops on all four sides of it which are given on rent.

    Ticket :- There is no entry fee to visit the Ghanta Ghar.


    MANDOR GARDEN

    Mandore, Jodhpur, 342007

    Mandore Garden is a standout amongst the best places to visit in Jodhpur. Mandore Garden is said to have been established in the 6th century by the rulers of the Pratihara dynasty. It was the capital of Marwar before the city of Jodhpur was established. If you have interest in exploring rich cultural and architectural heritage then this is one of the best places in Rajasthan.
    The garden is renowned for its encient cenotaphs(Chatris), which are built on memory of Royal rulers of marwar.

    • Historic Cenotaphs :- Cenotaphs are major Attraction of the place. These Cenotaphs are dedicated to various Royal Rulers of Marwar.
    • Ancient Temples:- There are Several Ancient temples in Mandor Garden dedicated to lord Shiva and lord Vishnu. These temples are popular for magnificent carvings and peaceful atmosphere.
    • Rani’s Mahal : - It is an example of great architecture of rajputs. It was named Rani’s Mahal because Once it served accommodation to Queens of Marwar.
    • Adventure Activity:- There are several adventure complexes that houses adventure activities. It is accessible with nominal ticket price.
    • Government Museum :- The museum has great collection of antique items. You will gain greater knowledge and information about the past when you visit this museum here.
      Before going there keep in mind that the museum is open on all days except Friday.
    • Kala Gora Bheruji Temple:- Many devotees come there for worship & this temple situated in mandor garden opposite a Government museum.
    • Toy Train:- At entrance you will get a toy train standing there, you can board it with ticket of Rs. 10. This train circles the Mandore Garden and returns to the entrance.

      TICKET :- There is no entry fee to enter the Mandore garden.


      MAHAMANDIR

      Mandore Road, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, 342001

Intricate artistry adorns the upper sections, cornices, and windows of the main entrance, while marble archways with exquisite Garuda sculptures embellish the complex.
      Today, a government school operates within a section of the Mahamandir complex, highlighting its integration into modern life. Situated merely 2 kilometers from Jodhpur city, the Mahamandir temple's grandeur remains easily accessible to visitors. Its vastness and allure aptly justify its name, offering a majestic experience to all who visit.
      TIMING :- Morning: 5 a.m. to 12 p.m. & Evening: 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
      TICKET : - There is no entry fee to visit the Mahamandir Temple.


      KAYLANA LAKE

      Near Pratap Nagar, Jodhpur 342001

      Kaylana Lake is an artificial Lake that built by Sir Pratap Singh, located at distance of 8 Kms west of Jodhpur. The climate of Marwar is Arid so that drought is frequent problem of this area. To get rid of drought Maharaja Sir Pratap Singh decided to develop a large water body. The construction of this lake was started in 1892. This lake helps to fulfill water need of the town. This lake remained deserted for years, going there wasn’t safe then but for last 10 years it has experienced major developments. If you are looking to get away from the noise of the city and are seeking some tranquillity, you need to visit this place.
      This place remains a bit busy nowadays. Major Attractions/ Facilities of this place are listed below:-

      RAO JODHA DESERT ROCK PARK

      Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park is located at the foot of the Mehrangarh Fort. This park is named after Rao Jodha (the founder of Jodhpur) and is spread across 72 hectares. It was created in 2006 to restore the natural ecology around the Mehrangarh fort. It was opened to the public in February 2011.
      If you love trekking then this is a great place in jodhpur where you can enjoy natural beauty. Nature lovers, photographers, and anyone interested in ecology should visit this park. Here you can see various birds and plants.
      There are four walking trails (yellow, green, red, and blue) that allow visitors to explore the park and enjoy the natural beauty while learning about the local ecology.
      Early morning would be the best time to explore this park. The area in and around the park contains distinctive volcanic rock and sandstone formations. The park includes a Visitors Centre with Interpretation Gallery, a native plant nursery, a small shop, and a cafe. Visiting Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park offers a chance to appreciate the natural environment and learn more about the unique desert ecosystem of Rajasthan.

      MACHIYA SAFARI PARK

      Kailana Rd, Pratap Nagar, Jodhpur 342003

      Machiya Safari Park is located at distance of 8 KMs west of Jodhpur near Kaylana Lake. The Machiya Safari Park is an abode to numerous wild animals like deer, desert fox, monitor lizard, blue bulls, rabbits, wild cats, mongoose, monkeys, etc
      There are ample points from where you can observe these animals without invading their privacy and the animals can often be found rejoicing in their habitat. This is a decent place in Jodhpur for travelers who love nature and tranquility. This Safari Park was planned in 1983.
      Timing :- 8.30 AM to 5 PM, Closed on Tuesday

      TOORJI KA JHALRA

      Makrana Mohalla, Sutharo Ka Baas Rd, Gulab Sagar, Jodhpur 342001

      Toor Ji Ka Jhalra is also known as Jodhpur Ki Bavdi(Stepwell). It was constructed in 1740. This Bawri has marvellous design that shows superiority of some of the best left over water harvesting structures of jodhpur. According to history, Queen Tanwar (Toor Rani) of Maharaja Abhay Singh of Jodhpur had built Jhalra in the year 1740, due to which it was named Turji Ka Jhalra. This architecture was built from the famous pink-red sandstone found in Jodhpur. Toorji Ka Jhalra is one of the most beautiful step wells with many platforms, Stairs and a wonderful Kund or pond in the center.
      TIMING : - This place can be visited between 6AM & 6PM (Opening hours may vary)

      BALSAMAND LAKE

      Mandore Rd, Balsamand, Jodhpur 342024

      You must experience tranquil beauty of Balsamand Lake if you are in jodhpur, This Lake is located just almost 12 kilometers from the Jodhpur city. This ancient artificial water body was built in 1159 AD by Balak Rao . Situated on the Jodhpur Mandore road, this lake is a very easy reach for the travelers. The well-manicured gardens of this place, the groves of variant fruits like mango, guava, plum and pomegranate and the sightings of various birds & animals, makes this place very alluring. This lake is very large surrounded by a hilly terrain scattered with arid yet dense vegetation.
